Marda (Jia Hongshen) falls in love with Moudan (Zhou Xun), then tries to kidnap her for ransom. Moudan escapes in the Suzhou River, never to be heard from again. Marda, after serving three years in prison for the kidnapping, meets a woman who looks exactly like Moudan (played by Zhou Xun in a dual role). This film shares many thematic and stylistic elements with Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo.
