Duty and honor conflict in a German prisoner-of-war camp when the aristocratic French officer becomes friends with the commandant while cooperating with his comrades in a daring escape. The conflicts between enemies and between the classes emphasize the awareness that certain ways of life are gone forever. The message of the movie is the tragic observation that war itself is the grand illusion.
