Summary: Richard Hamilton by Richard Morphet. Richard Hamilton's Historic role as the earliest pop artist recognized internationally. The Composite painting of 1956-62 in which he first married the fine artist's approach to the materials and some of the techniques of mass commercial culture are all included in this exhibition and discussed at length in the catalogue. Seen now, they show a classical refinement which earlier controversy obscured. Moreover, distance both brings into fuller focus their radical originality and clarifies their unbroken continuity with Hamilton's pre-pop work. [cont.]
