Summary: From the back of the book - The little red schoolhouse is one of the most beloved images in American history. At the turn of the century 200,000 one-room schools were in operation. Today, fewer than 850 are used as schools. America's Country Schools recaptures these small, isolated schools - from their form and furnishings to their students and the teachers who taught the four Rs. One of the book's revelations is that most country schools were not, after all, red. Some 400 illustrations, inducing three portfolios of photographs, present a moving portrait of an exceptionally varied array of schools, from sod dugouts to Frank Lloyd Wright.
