Shanta, the beautiful Hindu Ayah for the daughter of wealthy Parsees, is beloved by two men, one Hindu the other Muslim. As the darkness of the partition slowly eats away at the camaraderie among these young people in 1947 Lahore, emotions buried deeply within each of them begins to surface. This handsomely made, well acted romantic drama about the coming of age of a naive young girl and the tragic demise of trust among friends in a difficult epoch in India's history is the second film of a planned trilogy on modern day India by the gifted filmmaker Deepa Mehta. Mehta's first film in this elemental series, Fire, dealt regally with the issue of sexuality among Hindu women touching unstintingly on a lesbian relationship. Earth is filled with beautiful, smart young people at crossroads in their lives and their country's history. At the center of the story is the dreamy romanticism of the young girl lovingly called Lenny, who loves her beautiful Ayah and has crushes on Lenny's many admirers especially the young Muslim she calls the Ice Candy Man. In the end it is the Ice Candy Man who betrays all of them - is it because he is distraught at his unrequited love for Shanta? Or has his Muslim nationalism taken hold after witnessing the slaughtering of his people aboard a train that arrives to Lahore from India? Striking and effective. With: Aamir Khan as Ice Candy man, Nandita Das as Ayah Shanta, Rahul Khanna as Hasan, Maia Sethna as Lenny, Kitu Gidwani as Bunty Sethna, Kulbhushan Kharbanda as Imam din, Arif Zakaria as Rustom Sehtna, Gulshan Grove as Mr. Singh, and Eric Peterson as Mr. Rogers. Notes: Screenplay by Mehta. Cinematography by Giles Nuttgens. Music by A. R. Rahman. Edited by Barry Farrell.Summary: A romantic drama set in 1947 in Lahore before India and Pakistan became independent, where Hindu, Sikh, Parsee, and Muslim share a peaceful co-existence.
