Takemitsu emphasized the sound, images, and textures of natural living things, as he scored power struggles, paranoia, fractured family relations, and the two big subjects that often dominate the films his work accompanies: murder and suicide. Takemitsu's scores feature Japanese instruments and musical concepts, but he also used musician's performance techniques, engineering tweaks, and sometimes specific sound effects, which were performed, recorded, and edited into sharp musical statements for Japanese films that addressed issues heretofore rarely depicted in Japanese cinema. Interviews with Takemitsu, Teshigahara, Shinoda, Kobayashi and Oshima are illustrated with copious clips from their films.
