Cast: Chow Yun-fat, Michelle Yeoh, Zhan Ziyi, Chang Chen, Lung Sihung, Cheng Pei Pei.Summary: In Chinese with English subtitles. Martial Arts Epic. Romantic Melodrama. Chinese Cinema. Fairy Tales. Romantic Adventure. Directed by Ang Lee. Director Ang Lee, with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon has produced the most epic and, arguably, the best kung fu movie ever made. The film is designed and structured like an action fairy tale. The story revolves around the unrequited love between two champion fighting masters -- the beautiful and reserved Yiu Hsui Lien and the bold hero Li Mu Bai -- and how that love is challenged when Jen Yu, the willful, beautiful daughter of a powerful nobleman steals a famous sword placed in Li's care. Magic, mystery, romance, intrigue, witchcraft, and dazzling martial arts skills provide the energy and romance drive this thoroughly ingenuous and thrilling bit of movie making. Crouching Tiger lived up to the tremendous hype created by the film from the day that it debuted at Cannes in 2000. As Yiu Hsui and Li international stars Michelle Yeoh and Chow Yun Fat reached audiences at levels never before achieved by an international film with subtitles. The film appealed to audiences from the art-house crowds to kung-fu aficionados. Yeoh and Fat are excellent as the heroes but it is Zhang Zi Yi as Jen and Chang Cheng as the rascally young bandit king Lo who give the story heat and sex appeal. Lee, a master craftsman whose body of work ranges more widely than just about any other major world filmmaker working in movies today has orchestrated an masterpiece of movie pleasure. An instant, but real, classic. With: Sihung Lung as Sir Te, Cheng Pei-Pei as Jade Fox. Notes: Awards: Academy Awards for best Foreign Film, art direction [Tim Yip], cinematography [Peter Pau]. Academy Award nominations for best picture, director, screenplay, costume design [Tim Yip], editing [Tim Squyres], score and song [James Schamus and Tan Dun]. British Academy nominations for screenplay, cinematography, director, film, and editing. British Academy winner for best Foreign Film, music. Best director [Director's Guild & Golden Globe]. Box-office gross: $128,067,808 U.S.Summary: Set in 19th-century China, two master warriors are faced with their greatest challenge when the treasured Green Destiny sword is stolen.
