Summary: The Baltimore Region has had a long tradition in iron production, beginning with the colonial era, and continuing through the 1950s as Sparrows Point became the single largest steel complex in the the world. Baltimore's Cast-Iron Buildings provides the first integrated treatment of this facet of the Industrial Revolution in Baltimore. Joining a small number of similar volumes from Richmond, New York, and Portland, Oregon, it fills a gap in Baltimore's industrial architectural history. Prefabrication, mass production, standard components-all were employed in nineteenth-century Baltimore's cast-iron architecture and ornament. The remaining treasures of that period have a great deal to teach us about Victorian tastes and the evolution of American building technology.
