Summary: [from the back of the book] Humphrey Spender was one of the first people in this country [The UK] to use the 35mm camera for documentary journalism giving ordinary people their place in history, recording their way of life with tact, empathy, objectivity and truth. This collection includes his photographs of the Jarrow Hunger Marches; of street, pub and home life in London's East End; of rural Wiltshire and Suffolk, ' prosperous Bristol', poverty in Glasgow and the coastgaurds, sailors and fighter pilots of the 1939-45 war.
The exceptionally strong composition of these photographs derives as much from Humphrey Spender's lifelong involvement in painting as from his activities as a photographer. he saw himself as an ' Unobserved observer' ; he was a man with a strong social conscience committed to revealing simple, objective truths. Lensman shows why he is widely regarded as one of our very finest photographers.
