Summary: "Peripheral Vision(s): Perspectives on the "Indian" image by 19th century Northern Plains warrior-artists, Leonard Baskin and Fritz Scholder intends to spark a visual dialogue between the works of American sculptor, illustrator, and printmaker Leonard Baskin (1922-2000); painter and printmaker Fritz Scholder (1937-2005); and 19th century Ledger Drawings created by Plains warrior artists. The exhibition will be on display at McMaster from August 24 to December 20, 2019. Baskin and Scholder were contemporaries, and while the catalyst for creating large bodies of Indian portraits was, in part, derived from the same place (both were inspired by the American Indian Movement), the visual manifestation of their engagement with the realities of contemporary American Indian life borne out of historical injustice and erasure differed significantly."-- Provided by publisher.
