During the State of Emergency in the late 1980s, Thandeka and her photographer colleague were witnesses to the assassination of Dineo, a young activist, by government security forces. Thandeka was imprisoned and tortured by police while she was pregnant. Her daughter was born deaf and mute as a result. These events still haunt her so much that she suffers writers block as well as strained relations with her family, friends, and co-workers. The film's narrative bravely reflects Thandeka's disjointed reality and what she and millions of others endured during the apartheid period. As such the film is a critique of a post apartheid society that seems to be forgetting those most hurt by apartheid. The chance to bring her own past and present together presents itself when Thandeka is approached by Dineo's mother who writes to enlist Thandeka's aid in finding Dineo's body for a proper burial. This means tracing the three policemen responsible for Dineo's murder, exposing herself to their intimidation, and finally testifying before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. In English and Zulu with English subtitles. (California Newsreel)Summary: It is ten years since the last vestiges of apartheid's political regime were dismantled. For the average South African, the notion of struggle has been all too quickly relegated to the past. But for Thandi, a journalist suffering from writer's block, a more profound struggle continues to rage within. Living in a nation that seems too eager to forget its past, Thandi cannot shake the gnawing sense of guilt that continues to alienate her from her own family.
