The ceremonies and festivities gradually unfold over a tense day and night, capturing diverse vignettes as tradition mingles with its discontents. Women ritually bathe and dress the bride, a flirtatious teen-aged daughter schemes to escape her old-fashioned life, and a group of young village men plot to kill the Israeli guests as the codes of hospitality and of honor clash. A horse gets loose and runs to a mined field; Israeli soldiers and Arabs must cooperate to rescue it. The film offers a paean for a fading culture, questioning the very traditions that may destroy it, even as it celebrates them.
