Cast: Candace Evanofski, Donald Holden, Curtis Cotton, III, Damian Jewan Lee, Rachael Handy, Eddie Rouse, Paul Schneider.Summary: In a quiet, remote southern town, a group of children's summer turns on a tragic accident with one of their number. David Gordon Green's first film is an ambitious study of the quiet chaos of childhood for a group of children, mostly pre-teens, in a small North Carolina town. Green's narrative plays like a summer out of school when only the imagination the young can relieve the boredom of small town life. The script unfortunately seems to meander aimlessly from place to place. It is, for example, unclear how one is to perceive most of the adults in the films - most of them, especially the men, seem little more than juveniles themselves - are they an example of where some of the kids will end? George Washington seems to be about budding romance and sexuality, friendship, emotional dysfunction [by adults and the kids] but in curious ways it is not cohesively presented. The cast is largely filled with young amateurs, most of whom perform adequately enough. There are some bold strokes in this first effort but many viewers will find themselves barely able to finish the film. With: Candace Evanofski as Nasia, Donald Holden as George, Damian Jewan Lee as Vernon, Curtis Cotton III as Buddy, Racheal Handy as Sonya, Paul Schneider as Rico Rice, Edie Rouse as Damascus, Janet Taylor as Ruth, Derricka Rolle as Whitney, Ebony Jones as Denise, Jonathan Davidson as Euless, Scott Clackum as Augie, and Beau Nix as Rico's father. Notes: Produced, directed and written by Green. Cinematography by Tim Orr. Awards; Best First Film Award, N. Y. Film Critics Circle, 2000. Discovery Award, Toronto International Film Festival, 2000.
