Raul Ruiz brings a fluid camera style and a stylized script to invoke the difficult cinematic possibilities of Marcel Proust's masterpiece. Ruiz and his co-scenarist have created a film that synthesizes elements of most of Proust's Remembrance of Things Past and gives us an elegantly produced collage of the grand work. Ruiz's effort is intelligent and tasteful, but like the few attempts at translating Proust to the screen, it can not match the gloriously rich verbosity of the author's imagery. Though, as many critics assert, Proust's works [like Joyce's Ulysses] are evocatively cinematic, filmmakers' have yet to completely capture 'the film' aspects of Proust's language. The last half hour of the film, when the Proust character in the film is recapturing the past in image after image, word remembered after word, is far and away the most successful cinematic rendering of a sense of Proust's narrative. With: Emmanuelle Béart is Gilberte, Vincent Perez as Morel, John Malkovich as Baron de Charlus, Pascal Greggroy as Saint-Loup, Catherine Deneuve as Odette, Marie-France Pisier as Madame Verdurin, Chiara Mastroianni as Albertine, Christian Vadim as Bloch, Arielle Dombasle as Madame De Farch and Mathilde Seigner as Celeste. Also with: Dominique Labourier as Madame Cottard, Phillipe Morier-Gernoud as M. Cottard, Jacques Pieiller as Jupien, Hélène Sugere as Francoise, Monique Melinand as La grand-mere de Marcel and Laurence Fevrier as La mere de Marcel and with the voice of Patrick Chereau as Marcel. Notes: Produced by Paulo Branco. Screenplay by Ruiz with Gilles Taurand. Music by Jorge Arriagada.
