Lonely and longing for companionship, they marry to the outrage of Emmi's children and the dismay of friends and workers. Disc 2: In the nineteenth century, seventeen year old Effi Briest is married to the older Baron von Instetten and moves into a house, that she believes has a ghost, in a small isolated Baltic town. Effi is lonely when her husband is away on business, so she allows herself to be courted by Major Crampas. Disc 3: Franz "Fox" Biberkopf loses his job in a travelling circus. In need of cash for his weekly lottery purchase, Fox lets himself be picked up by an elegant older man named Max. Fox then wins half a million Marks in the lottery and Max introduces him to Eugen, who uses Fox and his money. Disc 4: Frankfurt housewife Emma Küsters shares her modest apartment with her son and his pregnant wife. A factory employee who goes berserk due to imminent layoffs, killing the plant owner's son and then committing suicide, turns out to be Emma's husband. Reporters besiege the family. Summary: Disc 5: Housewife Margot lives comfortably and loves her husband and daughter. Toward the end of her second pregnancy an undirected, growing anxiety takes hold of Margot. Her husband Kurt, who is busy studying for an exam, does not understand her situation. Her mother-in-law and sister-in-law are openly hostile to her. She resorts to valium and alcohol. Disc 6. Walter, a German anarchist poet, is short of money after his publisher refuses to give him an advance. He tries various ways of raising money, including shooting one of his mistresses and relying on the life savings of a woman from the country who is fanatically devoted to him. He also has to contend with his long-suffering wife, his fly-obsessed crazy brother, his other mistress, and a police murder investigation. Disc 7: The disabled, mean-spirited Angela invites her estranged parents, who she blames for her infirmities, for a week-end at the family's country estate. The parents, each unaware that the other has been invited, bring their respective lovers. Adding to the mix are Angela's faithful mute governess and her poet son. A nasty games of truth, Chinese roulette, is played after dinner. Disc 8: Maria and Hermann Braun marry in Germany close to the end of World War II but are shortly separated. Just after being sent to the russian Front, Hermann is reported missing, but Maria believes he is still alive. Alone, Maria uses her beauty and ambition to prosper in German's "economic miracle" of the 1950s.
