Cast: Jack Lemmon, Juliet Mills, Clive Revill, Edward Andrews.Summary: Jack Lemmon is Wendell Armbruster, a tight-assed executive from Baltimore who travels to Italy to bury his father, who has died in an automobile accident. When Armbruster gets to the island of Ischia to take care of his father's body, he discovers things about him that are, to say the least, disturbing to his sensibilities. Mr. Armbruster senior had another life in Italy-he was a bon-vivant with a mistress and the reputation as a good-time guy. Armbruster's efforts to get his father's body prepared for return to the States comes-a-cropper when he discovers that his father and his mistress both died in the accident. The mistress's daughter, Pamela Pigott is on the island too, and the very different personalities of the two clash. Other complications arise that drive Armbruster crazy, not the least of which is his relationship with Pamela. Avanti is one of the most obscure films made by Billy Wilder and Jack Lemmon. It is a romantic comedy that is clearly built around Wilder's imaginative use of Lemmon as a protypically finicky American male type. The film makes a lot of references to other films and filmmakers, and politics and social issues of the time, and Wilder appears to have relished the idea of having his lead characters undress - Lemmon and Mills bare all a couple of times. And when will most viewers have seen a romantic comedy in which constant jokes were made about the heroine's weight problem [until Bridget Jones that is]? With: Juliet Mills as Pamela Pigott, Clive Revill as Carlo Carlucci, Edward Andrews as J.J. Blodgett, Gianfranco Barra as Bruno, Raffaele Mottola as the passport officer, Franco Acampora as Armando Tortta, and Liono Coletta as Cipriani.Summary: A man travels to Italy to claim his dead father's body, and discovers he has been conducting an affair there for years. Things get complicated when he falls for the woman's daughter.
