Cast: Charlie Chaplin, Paulette Goddard, Jack Oakie, Reginald Gardiner, Billy Gilbert, Maurice Moscovich.Summary: A Jewish barber shares one thing with the dictator of Tomania, he could be his twin. This works temporarily when the forces for democracy try to replace the abominable Adenoid Hynkel with the barber. The effort fails but not without some small measure of success. This is the first fully sound film by Chaplin. He plays the double role of the barber and Hynkel. The film is effective and funny early on but it takes itself to seriously later. The famous speech at the end of the picture has often been given a little more stature than it deserves. Jack Oakey as Napolini gives a roaring imitation of Mussolini. With: Paulette Goddard as Hannah, Henry Daniell as Garbitsch, Billy Gilbert as Herring, Maurice Moscovich as Mr. Jaeckel, Emma Dunn as Mrs. Jaeckel, Grace Hayle as Mme. Napaloni, and Carte DeHaven as Bacterian Ambassador. Notes: There is an excellent scene with a balloon -- Hynkel with the world in his hands. Chaplin wrote the screenplay. The film's music is by Meredith Willson. It is reputed that Hitler copied his mustache from that worn by Chaplin's Tramp character. It's possible. Cinematography by Roland Toheroh and Karl Struss. Academy Award nominations for best picture, actor [Chaplin], supporting actor [Jack Oakie], original screenplay [Chaplin], and best score.Summary: Chaplin plays the double role of the persecuted Jewish barber and Adenoid Hynkel, dictator of Tomania. The barber is imprisoned, escapes, and is finally mistaken for the dictator at which point he makes an impassioned, humanistic speech which amazes the dictator's followers.
