This effort is a mix of dark comedy and film noir, and one of his most personal efforts, having based much of it on his own childhood. The story follows two Spaniards and how their adult lives have been profoundly effected by their upbringing in a Catholic boarding school. Reuniting as adults, one is a gay film director, the other has become a cross-dressing actor. The story travels across different times and multiple points of view as the two friends act out a new script that is interwoven with their childhood memories. Almodovar takes it one step further by having the same actors play various characters.
