Starring Rock Hudson and Eric Farr.Summary: In this documentary, filmmaker Mark Rappaport conducts a revisionist analysis of the famed Hollywood actor's cinematic career. By turns fascinating, provocative, and amusing, nothing Hudson did onscreen escapes Rappaport's revisionist thesis--reading a gay subtext everywhere--which yields both clever insights and obvious stretching of a point. Rappaport's analysis is on its strongest ground in the examination of the Doris Day/Rock Hudson comedies of the late 50s and 60s, whose plots often centered on Hudson assuming dual identities. Hudson was gay, but Rappaport's obliviousness to anything beyond a narrow interpretative rubric hampers an otherwise excellent argument.
