W Mason's 1902 adventure novel "The Four Feathers" has been adapted into a film no less than five times starting in 1915. The first version of the story to incorporate sound was this classic 1939 film by British film institution Alexander Korda starring John Clement. The film takes place in 1898 as British forces are on their way to the Sudan. Harry Faversham (Clement), the son of a long line of military heroes, resigns his commission, prompting 3 of his comrades in arms and the woman he loves to brand him a coward, each presenting him with a white feather to symbolize their disgust. Sufficiently goaded into heroism, Faversham journeys to the Sudan disguised as a Arab and goes behind enemy lines as a spy, which affords him the opportunity of saving his self righteous friends' lives, and demonstrating the value of valour.
