Cast: Maggie Cheung Man-yuk, Tony Leung Chiu Wai.Summary: An exercise in pure cinematic style. In the Mood is one of the more elegantly constructed films in recent memory. Director Wong Kar-Wai uses an endless series of images and moments to construct this up-to-the-moment sexual roundelay about two residents of a crowded Hong Kong rooming house whose spouses are always absent. Chow Mo-wan and his straying wife are estranged. Su Li-zhen's, his neighbor, has a husband whose work takes him to Japan for days and weeks at a time. These two attractive, sensually alluring people, in some ways, seem to relish their loneliness. They seem also to be curiously aware of one another's availability but wary of doing anything about it. Though Chow and Su are both cheated on, they are the cautious ones, the guilty lovers. Wong shoots the scenes between the lovers in confined spaces, tight shots in rooms, hallways, against walls, in cafes, and at offices. We see them at work, in the strict confines of their tiny apartments and, most interestingly, constantly, eating - in restaurants or in their crowded rooms. The film is spectacularly well photographed even in these confining spaces, spaces one must assume visualize the emotional constraints the two uncertain lovers find themselves in. Wong Kar-Wai has made a startlingly fresh film, one that offers new techniques but not at the expense of his story or his characters. Tony Leung Chiu-Wai and Maggie Cheung are perfectly cast as the Chow and Su, the lovers who never consummate that love. Both are very fine actors, and, more importantly, exquisitely evoke the sensuality and grace needed to help the director carry off this exercise in style. In the end, it is the director who teases us with expectations of carnality that he keeps, wittily, at bay. Also with Lia Chin a Mister Ho, Rebecca Pan as Mrs. Suen and Siu Ping-Lam as Ah Ping. Notes: Screenplay by Wong Kar-Wai. Cinematography by Christopher Doyle and Mark Lee Ping-bin. Music by Michael Galaso and Shigeru Umebayashi. Edited by William Chang. Art direction by man Lim-chung. Awards: Best foreign film nomination, 2000 British Academy. Best foreign film winner, L.A. Film Critics, New York Film Critics Circle, and National Society of Film Critics, 2001. The DVD version of the film contains a second disc that offers detailed information and insights on the context of the period during which the film takes place, early 1960s Hong Kong among the émigré Shanghai business classes who left China in 1949 after the ascent of the Communists. Interviews with Wong Kar-Wai and other interesting information about the film's cast and other sources are also included.Summary: The story of two lonely people who discover in each other the intimacy they have lost in their marriages.
