Cast: Uma Thurman, Lucy Liu, Vivica A. Fox, Michael Madsen, Daryl Hannah, David Carradine, Sonny Chiba, Chiaki Kuriyama, Gordon Liu, Michael Parks.Summary: Kill Bill Vol. 1 Tarantino's long awaited fourth film is the first installation of an epic vendetta by an unnamed Bride played by Uma Thurman. After emerging from a 4 year coma, Thurman's character compiles a list of assassins responsible for the death of her entire wedding party and the loss of her baby. In Tarantino's typical style, the film is chock full of pop culture references and asides for many martial arts films, B action movies and television series of the 1960's and 70's. Many images call up Bruce Lee and a young Jackie Chan. Tarrantino also pays homage to Sonny Chiba, casting him as a retired master sword craftsman and the man who trained Bill. Known for his fondness of irony, Tarrantino cast David Carradine in the title role of Bill, the ruthless and brutal leader of the Deadly Viper Assassin Squad, a role very unlike the character he is best known for from the Kung Fu series of the 70's; a Shaolin Monk on the lamb. The Kill Bill screenplay was written specifically with Uma Thurman in mind to play the central character. Tarrantino has written other screenplays with strong female lead characters, but only one other has made it to the screen, "True Romance," directed by Tony Scott. The female lead character, Alabama, is both the narrator and central figure of the film. A fan of non-linear progression, Tarrantino enlists this device again, revealing the plot through a series of chapters and flashbacks - not unlike some of his earlier efforts with "Reservoir Dogs" and "Pulp Fiction." Notes: Written and Directed by Quentin Tarrantino. Starring Uma Thurman, Lucy Liu, Vivica Fox, Daryl Hannah, and David Carradine. Director of photography, Robert Richardson ; art director, Daniel Bradford ; editor, Sally Menke ; original music, The RZA ; costume designers, Kumiko Ogawa, Catherine Marie Thomas ; production designers, Yohei Taneda, David Wasco ; special effects supervisor, Jason Gustafson.Summary: Four years after taking a bullet in the head at her own wedding, the bride emerges from a coma and decides it's time for payback ... with a vengeance. Having been gunned down by her former boss and his deadly squad of international assassins, it's a kill-or-be-killed fight. She didn't start this deadly series of events, but she is determined to finish the business.
