Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne.Summary: Thomas Anderson, aka Neo, is a computer geek who seems bound to his cubicle and the world inside his computer station. Engaging in some moderate hacking, he enters some kind of portal where he meets the cryptic and intriguing Morpheus. Morpheus informs Neo that the life and world around him is, in fact, virtual, and not something simple and concrete. He further tells the bewildered young man that this virtual world pits humans against a menacing and powerful artificial intelligence system. Morpheus leads the forces battling this seemingly overwhelming nemesis to mankind. Even more incredible to Neo is Morpheus' assertion that Neo is 'the One' -- the human who will help resolve the dire mystery of the Matrix. Upon this relatively straight-forward storyline, the brothers Wachowskis have created one of the most dynamic and innovative action movies ever made. Filled with startlingly beautiful special and visual effects, stylishly choreographed fight scenes [by the Hong Kong fight master Yeun Woo Ping], and dialog rich with edgy new-age philosophical and psychological imagery, The Matrix takes American action movies to a level of schlock profundity that makes the film, for its most avid fans, almost a life-changing, even a religious experience. The sequels, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, were both released in 2003 with much ballyhoo and anticipation -- pleasing as many adherents as not, and getting the mythpoeic action film a cover story in Time Magazine. Notes: Screenplay by Andy and Larry Wachowski. Cinematography by Bill Pope. Music Score by Don Davis. Edited by Zach Staenberg. Production designer, Owen Paterson. Art direction by Hugh Bateup and Michelle McGahey. Costumes by Kym Barrett. Visual Effects supervisor, John Faeta. Fights Choreographer, Yeun Woo Ping. Box-office gross: $175,500,000 U.S. & $285,000,000 International. Awards: Academy Award winner for editing, sound [John Reitz, Gregg Rudloff, David E. Campbell, and David Lee], sound effects editing, visual effects. British Academy nominations for cinematography, editing, production design, sound and visual effects.Summary: In an anti-utopian future, the "real" world as we know it is nothing more than a computer construct, created by an all-powerful artificial intelligence. A small group of humans has found a way out of the construct, and are now fighting for the future of the human race.
