Summary: Citeaux in Burgundy was the fountain-head of Cistercian architecture and Le Thornnet one of the mother-abbey's principal offspring. 'The pictures in this book are witness to the truth', says Le Corbusier in his preface. 'Light and shade are the loudspeakers of this architecture of truth, tranquillity and strength. Nothing further could add to it'. Around Lucien Herve's inspired photographs, Francois Cali has fashioned a handsome frame, consisting of quotations from the psalms, the saints and other sources. He, too, it is who is responsible for the shape and harmony of the book as a whole."
