The 119 objects pictured and discussed range from the ordinary to the unusual - from side chairs, armchairs, and chaises lounges, desks and tables to an armoire, folding screen, music rack, and clock - rendered in a wide variety of materials - from beechwood, mahogany, and birch, to flat and tubular steel, and aluminum. The individual pieces were designed by an equally wide range of artists: had craftsmen such as Samuel Gragg whose side chair of 1808 shares an early place with the humble Windsor chair; Michael Thonet, the pioneer designer who revolutionized the workplace translating shop techniques into mass production and whose designs are still produced; architect-designers of turn-of-the-centuru Vienna - Josef Hoffman, Otto Wagner, Adolf Loos, and others less well known."
