Summary: From the Jacket - "'A not unsightly building' was John Langton's understated view of University College, Toronto. As Vice-Chancellor of the University he oversaw both design and construction of this magnificent complex. He was therefore in a position to appreciate the extraordinary care taken by Cumberland & Storm ( Toronto's leading architects) in the creation of their masterpiece in 1856-9. his ironic comment is understandable, however, after three decades of failed attempts to provide adequate buildings for what was originally known as the University of King's College. With a wealth of drawings, paintings , prints and early photographs, this book tells for the first time the complex story of those frustrated earlier efforts, the development of a truly singular building, its virtual destruction and its restoration so that nearly a century and a half after Langton wrote it is still the commanding centerpiece and chief ornament of the country's per-eminent university."
