Summary: From the dust jacket - " Architects and builders have complained for many years that no one seems to know the basic requirements of Protestant Church design. Ministers and congregational officials have been helpless in the face of criticism, unable to offer more than personal opinions about 'how a church ought to look' This uncertainty has coincided with a period of rapid urban expansion and church building. One unfortunate result, Mr. Fiddes writes, has been that 'the architect is tempted to substitute for the truth of revealed religion, his own artistic insights'. he adds with some emphasis however that ' the solution to the artistic problem isnot ot restrict the art but to give him intelligent terms of reference.' In this book Mr. Fiddes points out, in direct and precise language, what functions and objectives must be taken into consideration by all who are responsible for Protestant church design :ministers, church officials, architects and builders. This book will be a a welcome aid to everyone involved in the building of a new church.
