Summary: Preservation or Progress? Toronto's Union Station is a triumph of Beaux-Arts magnificent, a gem of Canadian public architecture. The Great hall with its soaring eighty-eight foot ceiling has been called 'the finest room in Canada' and has been the Open Gate for thousands of immigrants and travelers to the city and beyond. But the station stands on Toronto's waterfront at the core of the proposed Metro Centre development, the railroad companies' dream of realizing enormous profits from the area. They want to tear it down. Union Station is threatened. it is worth preserving? Here, in photographs, narrative, and poetry, Richard Bebout and his collaborators portray its history, splendor and romance, showing how much will be lost to Canadians if it is razed in the name of progress.
