Subject(s): Summary: From the back of the book - " George 1 came to the throne in 1714; George IV died in 1830. Between those dates Georgian London transformed itself into a great imperial capital. A criss-cross pattern of streets and squares covered former marshes and meadows; new bridges spanned the Themes at Westminster and Blackfriars, and later at three more points; new roads linked Paddington and Islington, and pushed down into Southwark and Lambeth; villages such as Hackney and Fulham became suburbs, and the arcaded terraces of Somerset House and Adelphi hinted at a Themes Embankment. These are some of the bare facts of the development; in Georgian London Sir John Summerson fills them with ife and meaning, showing how closely he buildings and history of an age are connected....."
