Summary: "This is a pioneer work, its aim is to indicate something of the quality - and quantity - if the building of the Church of England erected outside London, between 1603 and 1837. This period is of course the one for which the compilers of guide books have for long cherished a particular hatred, and it is Mr. Whiffen's purpose to show how miss-placed that hatred has been. The author believes not merely that these 250 odd years were a time of great architectural achievement, but also that the provinces have much to boast of - as for example in the ' rococo Gothik ' manner - which is completely absent from the work of the metropolis.
