Summary: From the Jacket - English churches of the late nineteenth-century suggest a clearcut idea of what a church should look like, and it is still widely held. Certain features of the building, the position of the altar and pulpit for instance, imply certain ideas about worship and the relations between priest and congregation. Things were very different at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Dr White shows how the change came about, and in particular the influence of the Cambridge Camden Society."
