Summary: From the Foreword - "As an institution the British Museum is unique. It is liable on a first visit to appear portentous and unwelcoming. This is due to its history and the architecture of the building in which it is housed. from the time that curiosities were first assembled, it was assumed that the purpose of collecting them was to assuage curiosity. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries there were countless private museums comprising classical and Egyptian antiquities and specimens illustrative of geology and natural history. This is the tradition from which the British Museum springs....."
