Summary: from the dust jacket - In July 1779 the arches of the first bridge ever to be built of iron spanned the River Severn at Coralbrookdale; today that bridge is perhaps the. most important industrial monument in Britain, and the center-peice of the world-famous iron bridge George Museum. The building of the Iron Bridge was important in two respects. First, in the early eighteenth century the Shropshire coalfield and the industries associated with it - especially iron-founding - was the cradle of the industrial Revolution and the river its economic lifeline; yet there was no bridge across the Severn George and its ferries were incapable of carrying vehicles. Secondly - and more important still - the manufacture and application of iron had been developed further in Shropshire than in any other area as a result of the Abraham Darby's successful experiment in smelting iron with coke in 1709. Thus in the authors' words, the bridge was a ' magnificent declaration of the structural potential of cast iron'. - [...cont]
