Summary: From the Foreword - " The first page of The Englishwoman in America carries the footnote that it is not by the author of Englishwoman in Russia. It might have been rather more useful if it had warned the reader that it was not by the author of An Englishwoman in American which had been published in England in 1848, eight years before, by the doughty Mrs. Sarah Mytton Maury. The. latter, a mature but undaunted mother of eleven children, had, in this and previous work, the Statesmen of America in 1846, engaged in a spirited, if often rather incoherent, defense of the Democratic Party, Slavery, Roman Catholics, Irish Immigrants, and a good many other things or people which Isabella Lucy Bird, a decade later, and not long out of her teens, was to find anathema."
