Vengeful spirits and poltergeists have long been the subject of fictional horror films. "An American Haunting" differs because it claims to be based on the only state-validated account of a human death caused by supernatural intrusion. Whether this is a clever marketing ploy or a solid foundation for credibility is for viewers to decide. In the early 1800s in Red River, Tennessee, the Bell family lives peacefully on their farm property. Things change with the arrival of a ghost who scares the bejeesus out of them and threatens more doom and gloom. Believing that a witch's curse is the root of the evil, the family tries to stop the curse before it stops them. The story shifts between the events of 1820s and a parallel story in modern times that is believed to be linked to the original madness.
