Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880-1938) und Emil Nolde (1867-1956) lebten zur Zeit der deutschen Kolonialherrschaft, die sie sozialisierte und prägte. Der Band thematisiert ihre intensive Beschäftigung mit Kunst und Kultur aus anderen Teilen der Welt und betrachtet ihre Werke im historischen und ideologischen Kontext des ausgehenden Kaiserreichs.In Abgrenzung zur westlichen Gesellschaft und den etablierten Normen suchten die beiden Künstler Inspiration in außereuropäischen Lebenswelten, insbesondere in Afrika und Ozeanien. Eine Begegnung fand zunächst in den ethnografischen Museen und durch die damalige Unterhaltungskultur in Deutschland statt. Davon angeregt begann Ernst Ludwig Kirchner seine Arbeitsräume mit selbst gestalteten Objekten und Textilien einzurichten, er reiste jedoch selbst nie vor Ort. Emil Nolde nahm 1913/14 an einer vom deutschen Kolonialamt organisierten Reise nach Neuguinea teil.
