A black hockey player hopes to be drafted into the NHL, but his dreams are threatened by the racial tensions in his Nova Scotia community. "Out of approximately 600 professional hockey players, only thirty are black. Mattie Slaughter, a hockey phenom from the rural community of North Preston wants to make it thirty-one. Mattie needs to keep his nose clean and avoid trouble but is drawn into a world where racism taints every interaction. His older brother is a hustler pushing the limits in a dangerous underworld and Mattie's crush, Jayme, is hooked up with a member from a group of racist bullies.
